The Mentor Role

As a mentor, you’ll play a vital role in supporting young people through our fishing and outdoor mentoring program. While you are not expected to be a counsellor or caseworker, you are a positive role model who provides encouragement, shares knowledge, and helps build trust with your mentee.

Frequently Asked Questions

To ensure the best experience for our mentees, we ask that all mentors are able to:

  • Complete required training - delivered in person and online over a three-week period.

  • Attend the Induction / Meet Your Mentor Day - an opportunity to connect with mentees, families, and fellow mentors.

  • Commit to at least 4 outings per year - joining group fishing and outdoor sessions with mentees.

  • Submit post-outing reflections - short observation notes that help us track progress and improve the program.

  • Provide encouragement and guidance - support young people as they develop confidence, resilience, and social connections.

  • Share fishing and outdoor skills - introduce mentees to new hobbies they can enjoy for life.

  • Build trust and respect - create a safe, supportive environment where young people feel valued.

  • Travel with the group - accompany mentees on program outings (transport provided via mini-bus or van).

  • Maintain safe ratios - support a 2:5 mentor-to-mentee ratio to ensure safety and quality time with each young person.

  • Assist with communication - help coordinate and contact parents or guardians when needed.

  • Record reflections - complete a short observation or feedback form after each trip to help us improve the program.

We welcome applicants who have a passion for mentoring young people and/or a love of fishing and the outdoors. Ideal mentors are positive role models with qualities such as:

  • Ability to guide and inspire young people
  • Life experience in navigating challenges or overcoming hardships
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • A commitment to supporting youth in a safe and encouraging environment

All mentors must also:

  • Successfully pass a Police Check
  • Hold a valid Working With Children Check (WWCC)
